Deficiency of P450 scc results in a serious disorder since the biosynthesis of all of the steroid hormones is prevented, leading to lipid accumulation in the gland (lipoid adrenal hyperplasia) and differentiation disorders in the male foetus. The defect is rare, and few patients survive early infancy.
